Since the founding of our group, with the aim of offering our guests added value across our establishments – and not least providing alternatives to late-night après-ski – we have created an attractive weekly programme.
Many of the leisure activities our wonderful winter sports destination has to offer are often left unexplored by guests.
Curling is certainly one of the most sociable activities St. Anton has to offer.
Over the past few years, we have inspired many of our guests to take part in this convivial pastime.
Curling, which has a long tradition on frozen lakes or specially designed lanes, is all about sliding the stock as close as possible to a target – known as the Daube.
The game is played in groups: two teams compete against each other, with players taking turns to glide their stocks towards the target circle.
The target is the Daube, a round rubber disc placed in the centre at the far end of the lane. After a set number of ends – usually six – the team with the highest score wins.
Getting started with curling is straightforward, although a little practice is needed to develop the right technique and feel for the stock. A calm stance and a smooth, controlled swing are key to achieving an accurate shot.
As with most skill-based games, practice makes perfect. It can take some time to judge distances reliably. Whether played on a prepared artificial track, a frozen lake or even on asphalt lanes in summer, curling is a multi-generational activity that brings people together.
It is the perfect combination of outdoor exercise, social interaction and friendly competition.
Wrap up warm, grab a ice stock and experience this traditional winter pastime with members of our group every Thursday at the WM Hall in St. Anton.
